The core function of the department is to train teachers in language skills which involve both content and pedagogy. The department comprises 10 competent, experienced and self motivated members of staff. 

The department has mainly been offering training in English and Kiswahili languages for P1 teachers. However, with the new curriculum dispensation (CBC) additional learning areas have been introduced. These include; French, German, Arabic, Mandarin, Indigenous Languages and the Kenyan Sign Language. The department is currently offering training for diploma in primary teacher education (DPTE) and diploma in early childhood education (DECTE) teachers. The trainees in session are undertaking the upgrading program for primary school teachers. The program is expected to equip the teachers with requisite competencies and values to be able to implement the CBC curriculum at the primary school level.
