St. Mark's Teachers College Kigari

Ability, Responsibility, Maturity

BRIEF HISTORY

The college was started in 1910 by the church Missionary society as a training centre for catechists and evangelists. Eventually, it became a place for the introduction of innovative ideas in agriculture and social welfare. In 1935 the missionary society started a Normal school which trained a small number of P4, P3, and P2 primary school teachers. After independence in 1964 the college was converted to a public teachers’ training college. Its population has proportionately grown with the physical developments over time. Currently the college is one of the many colleges offering Diploma in Primary Teacher Education in line with the MOE Guidelines for a Competency Based Curriculum.

SPONSORSHIP

St. Mark’s Kigari Teachers training college is sponsored by the Anglican church of Kenya. The Anglican Church came to Kigari in the year 1910 through the efforts of a C.M.S. missionary called Rev. John Comley. He did a lot to evangelize to the locals and to offer them literacy and numeracy skills and also opened a health centre to care for the sick. It is from his efforts that the college, the Emmanuel church kigari and many primary and secondary schools have came up in Mt. Kenya East area.
